Ozone action on Entamoeba histolytica

    La amebiasis es un importante problema de salud sobre todo en países tropicales, es considerada la tercera causa de muerte entre las enfermedades parasitarias en todo el mundo. La amebiasis se manifiesta por transmisión de quistes de Entamoeba histolytica a través de la vía fecal-oral a partir de agua o alimentos contaminados.

    La ozonoterapia, consiste en la aplicación de una mezcla de oxígeno médico con ozono el cual es una molecula formada por tres atomos de oxigeno O3. Entre los efectos biológicos del ozono, el primer lugar lo ocupa tradicionalmente el efecto germicida. Esta acción del ozono actúa cuando se aplica por una vía externa, siguiendo las diversas modalidades terapéuticas, principalmente en concentraciones elevadas.

    El primer objetivo del ozono son las membranas plasmáticas de la célula y las modificaciones inducidas por el ozono en el contenido intracelular, es decir, oxidación de proteínas citoplasmáticas y alteración de las funciones de los órganos.

    En este estudio se logró demostrar mediante las diferentes técnicas microscópicas el impacto del ozono sobre la amiba, encontrando el daño a membranas, así como las diferentes reacciones que tiene para llegar al objetivo final que es la muerte de los trofozoítos. Con las diferencias entre cada una de las técnicas y dosis empleadas para dicho experimento, se encontraron resultados significativos para sugerir el uso germicida del ozono, particularmente contra parasitosis por E. histolytica.

    Amebiasis is a major health problem, especially in tropical countries, and is considered the third leading cause of death among parasitic diseases worldwide. Amebiasis is manifested by the transmission of Entamoeba histolytica cysts through the fecal-oral route from contaminated water or food. Ozone therapy consists of the application of a mixture of medical oxygen with ozone, which is a molecule formed by three atoms of oxygen O3. Among the biological effects of ozone, the first place is traditionally occupied by the germicidal effect. This action of ozone acts when applied externally, following the various therapeutic modalities, mainly in high concentrations. The first target of ozone is the plasma membranes of the cell and the modifications induced by ozone in the intracellular content, i.e., oxidation of cytoplasmic proteins and alteration of the functions of the organs.

    In this study it was possible to demonstrate by means of different microscopic techniques the impact of ozone on amoeba, finding the damage to membranes, as well as the different reactions that it has to reach the final objective which is the death of the trophozoites. With the differences between each of the techniques and doses used for this experiment, significant results were found to suggest the germicidal use of ozone, particularly against E. histolytica parasitosis.
