    Este artículo se propone identificar y comprender las características de la comuna San José, Manizales, Colombia, con respecto a las prácticas de agricultura urbana y su incidencia en el desarrollo urbano sostenible y en la defensa del territorio. Para ello, se siguió un método mixto que permitió, con el apoyo del software ATLAS.ti, el análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de la información recolectada mediante encuesta, entrevista, grupo y focal y observación en el campo. Entre los hallazgos, se evidenció que la agricultura urbana se reconoce en la comuna como estrategia para la apropiación y defensa del territorio. Asimismo, las acciones de la comunidad por la defensa de la comuna San José han llevado a un desarrollo urbano más sostenible en el cual los habitantes buscan mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Se concluye que las prácticas de agricultura urbana gestadas por la Fundación Comunativa en la comuna, han permitido la generación de nuevos vínculos barriales, fortaleciendo el tejido social fragmentado y permitiendo así la creación de vínculos profundos con la tierra, con la ejecución de actividades conjuntas para ejercer la defensa del territorio, el buen vivir y su soberanía alimentaria.

    This article aims to identify and understand the characteristics of the San José Commune, Manizales, Colombia, with respect to urban agriculture practices and their incidence in sustainable urban development and in the defense of the territory. l Study carried out in the San José Commune in Manizales, Colombia. For this, a mixed method was followed that allowed, with the support of the Atlas ti software, the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the information collected through a survey, interview, group and focus group, and observation in the field. Among the findings, it was evidenced that urban agriculture is recognized in the Commune as a strategy for the appropriation and defense of the territory. Likewise, the actions of the community for the defense of the San José Commune have led to a more sustainable urban development in which the inhabitants seek to improve their living conditions. It is concluded that the urban agriculture practices developed by the Communal Foundation in the commune, have allowed the generation of new neighborhood ties, strengthening the fragmented social fabric and thus allowing the creation of deep ties with the land, with the execution of joint activities to exercise the defense of the territory, good living and their food sovereignty.
