La protesta estudiantil y la crisis de la democracia en India, 1974-1977

    En la historiografía india existe un consenso en torno al importante papel jugado por el movimiento estudiantil en la precipitación de la primera gran crisis de la democracia India, asociada con la declaración del estado de emergencia entre 1975 y 1977. Sin embargo, han habido pocos esfuerzos para vincular las trayectorias de la política estudiantil en aquel país con otros movimientos gestados en distintas partes del mundo durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970. Enfocado en el papel de liderazgo jugado por Jayaprakash Narayan en dichas protestas estudiantiles, este artículo propone que el movimiento estudiantil de aquellos años en India debe ser entendido como un episodio central para entender las grandes trasformaciones vividas a lo largo y ancho del Tercer Mundo en los llamados “sesentas globales”.

    In Indian historiography, there is a consensus regarding the important role played by the student movement in precipitating the first great crisis of Indian democracy, associated with the declaration of the state of emergency between 1975 and 1977. However, few efforts have been made to link the trajectories of student politics in that country with other movements that arose in different parts of the world during the 1960s and 1970s. Focusing on the leadership role played by Jayaprakash Narayan in these student protests, this article argues that the student movement of those years in India must be understood as an important episode of the great transformations experienced throughout the Third World in the so-called “global sixties”.
