A evolução dos incêndios em Portugal continental, ao longo dos últimos cinquenta anos, não tem sido constante, o que permite, combinando diferentes parâmetros estatísticos, estabelecer diferentes “gerações” de incêndios. Do cruzamento dos elementos analisados resultaram quatro gerações de incêndios. O fator mais importante para a definição dessas gerações foi, sem dúvida, o da área do maior incêndio registado em cada ano. Considerou-se um intervalo de 10 mil hectares, para separar as diferentes gerações de incêndios, e obtiveram-se quatro gerações. Na última classe teve de ser usado o dobro desse valor, dadas as circunstâncias anormais registadas em 2017, ano que marcou o início da quarta geração de incêndios de Portugal.

The trend in wildfires in mainland Portugal over the last fifty years has not been constant, which makes it possible to combine different statistical parameters and so establish different "generations" of fires. The cross-checking of the analysed elements yielded four generations of fires. The most important factor for defining these generations was undoubtedly the area of the largest fire recorded each year. An interval of 10 thousand hectares was used to separate the different generations of fires, and four generations were obtained. Twice that amount had to be used for the last class, given the abnormal circumstances recorded in 2017, the year that marked the beginning of the fourth generation of fires in Portugal.
