This article highlights the polemical dimension of the relationship between theory and politics raised by Jacques Rancière after the events of May 68. By returning to the historical-political stakes of his adherence to and break with Althusserism, the text shows how a whole series of political struggles that took place during the 1960s revealed to him the way in which the Althusserian project of restoring theoretical Marxism as a political cutting edge led to the establishment of a community of scholars suppressing politics.
