  • In this paper, after attempting to historically contextualise the Greek ‘invention’ of democracy and the emergence of its institutions and rituals, I will focus on some aspects of democratic governance. In doing so, I aim to show how theoretical elaboration, especially that of Aristotle, provided subsequent centuries with a set of problems and solutions that would condition later reflection and help to shape a conception of democracy that could not be directly superimposed on the experience of the póleis
