Throughout the 19th century there were several communication projects towards the central coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, which, if realized, would have led to the Pacific Ocean, in the ports of Santa Cruz Huatulco or Puerto Angel. Despite the resources invested in such ideas and initiatives, all of them are part of unbuilt projects. The particular interest of this article focuses on the case of the Ferrocarril Meridional Mexicano, also called Ferrocarril Oaxaqueño, which was in force mainly between 1880 and 1885. From the consultation of unpublished newspaper and archival sources we seek to recreate this little known history.
