Structural Duality as a Reflection of the Formal Design of Language on Music O riOl Q uintana S anfeliu Centre de Lingüística Teòrica (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) Abstract This article argues for a deep parallel between the formal systems of language and music involving a structural duality in a prosodic domain and a syntactic one. This structural duality is a design property of the formal organization of language that, as argued here, is shared with music. Specifically, it is argued that tonal music, as a formal system, is organized in two main domains of hierarchical structure, the rhythmic- melodic domain and the harmonic domain, which have comparable features to the prosodic and syntactic structural domains of language, respectively. Three aspects of these structural domains are discussed as evidence for these parallels. These aspects are the interpretive nature of the units and constituents of each hierarchical domain, the global struc- tural shape that each domain’s principles of structure building tend to form, and the recursive properties of the respective hierarchical spines
