In general Spanish "venir (come) + gerund" can either have a lexical reading or be a highly grammaticalized periphrasis expressing what will be labelled "perfect of persistent situation". As a result of language contact with Quichua in the Ecuadorian Highlands, the construction has acquired a third function: it is a weakly grammaticalized expression of recent past in which the original movement meaning of venir remains largely intact. This paper reveals the way in which this innovation came to form part of Ecuadorian Highland Spanish.
