Until now, Antoine Watteau's painting "Louis XIV mettant le cordon bleu à monsieur de Bourgogne" has been known only through an engraving by Nicolas de Larmessin. The rediscovery of the original painting in the Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw offers an opportunity to reconsider the significance of this otherwise atypical work. It was made while Watteau was an assistant in the atelier of Antoine Dieu, and was a modello based upon his master's drawing. It reminds us of the traditional work done by Watteau in the years before he became celebrated for his very different fetes galantes
