    Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Brasil e Estados Unidos firmaram acordos na área da saúde com o intuito de combater as doenças que grassavam na Amazônia. Dentre os esforços de guerra, a defesa da saúde dos trabalhadores envolvidos na exploração da borracha fez com que os países se unissem na criação do SESP – Serviço Especial de Saúde Pública –, agência responsável pelo saneamento e educação sanitária da Amazônia. Moradores locais foram recrutados e atuaram como guardas sanitários exercendo tarefas consideradas importantes. Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar as ações desses trabalhadores, o processo de seleção, formação e atuação nas frentes de trabalho no interior do Pará. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, foi utilizada coleta e análise crítica de fontes, como os documentos oficiais do Serviço. Nele, constatou-se o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas para a região e o protagonismo de homens simples, mas que foram responsáveis por levar saneamento e educação sanitária para a Amazonia em tempos de guerra.

    During World War II, Brazil and the United States signed agreements in the area of health with the aim of combating the diseases that raged in the Amazon. Among the war efforts, the defense of the health of workers involved in the exploitation of rubber led the countries to unite in the creation of the SESP – Special Public Health Service –, the agency responsible for sanitation and healtheducation in the Amazon. Local residents were recruited and acted as sanitary guards performing tasks considered important. This article aims to analyze the actions of these workers, the selection process, training and performance on the work fronts in the interior of Pará. For the development of the research, collection and critical analysis of sources were used, such as the official documents of theService. In it, the development of public policies for the region and the protagonism of simple men, but who were responsible for bringing sanitation and health education to the Amazon in times of war, were verified.
