Resumen de Ansiedad, depresión y suicidio en el musical estadounidense: Una visión a través de Lady in the Dark, Sweeney Todd y Dear Evan Hansen

  La ansiedad, la depresión y el suicidio son temas tabúes de los que todavía poco se habla de una manera abierta y honesta, tanto en el teatro musical como en su homónimo cinematográfico. En 2015 vemos sobre las tablas la obra Dear Evan Hansen con letra y música de Ben Pasek y Justin Paul y libreto de Steven Levenson, en que por primera vez se trata abiertamente las consecuencias de patologías mentales. Sin embargo, esto no significa que no haya ejemplos a lo largo de la historia del teatro y el cine musical donde los personajes protagonistas exhiban algún tipo de patología mental. Por ello, en este artículo analizaremos el caso de las obras Lady in the Dark (Moss Hart, 1941), Sweeney Todd (Stephen Sondheim, 1979) y Dear Evan Hansen, poniendo de relevancia la escasa representación de enfermedades mentales a lo largo de la historia del teatro y el cine musical.

  Anxiety, depression, and suicide are taboo subjects that are still rarely talked about in an open and honest way, both in musical theatre and in its cinematic namesake. In 2015 we see on the stage the work Dear Evan Hansen, Dear Evan Hansen with lyrics and music by Ben Pasek and Justin Paul and book by Steven Levenson, which for the first time openly deals with the consequences of mental pathologies. However, this does not mean that there are no examples throughout the history of musical theatre and film where the main characters do not exhibit some kind of pathology. For this reason, in this article we will analyze the case of the plays Lady in the Dark (1941), Sweeney Todd (1979) and Dear Evan Hansen, highlighting the scarce representation of mental illnesses throughout the history of theater and musical cinema.
