    La industria marítima ha evolucionado positivamente en las últimas décadas en materia de descarbonización. Pese al crecimiento enorme de tráfico marítimo (especialmente como consecuencia del crecimiento económico del Lejano Oriente encabezado por China y el traslado de la manufactura de Occidente a Asia), las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero se han mantenido por debajo del 3 por 100 del total mundial gracias al gigantismo de los buques, las mejoras en la operativa y construcción de las embarcaciones y el funcionamiento más eficiente de los motores. Evidentemente queda un largo camino por recorrer hasta alcanzar el objetivo de conseguir una navegación marítima neutra en carbono. También para reducir otras externalidades del transporte marítimo. El artículo repasa esta evolución, la situación actual y las perspectivas de futuro de la industria ante el reto del cambio climático.

    The maritime industry has evolved positively in recent decades in terms of decarbonization. Despite enormous growth in maritime traffic (especially as a consequence of Far East economic growth led by China and the shift of manufacturing from the West to Asia), greenhouse gas emissions have remained below 3 % of the global total. Thanks to the gigantism of the ships, the improvements in the operation and construction of the vessels and the more efficient opera-tion of the engines. Obviously there is a long way to go to achieve the goal of achieving carbon-neutral maritime navigation. Also to reduce other externalities of maritime transport. The article reviews this evo-lution, the current situation and the future prospects of the industry in the face of the challenge of climate change.
