In forest nurseries, diseases of the root system are especially important, among which are those caused by fungi with anamorphs (asexual forms) of Cylindrocarpon spp. In August 2022, the ITAP Phytosanitary Diagnostic and Assistance Service (SEDAF) received seven samples of different species from a forest nursery; specifically, the species Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree), Ilex aquifolium (holly), Juniperus phoenicea (black juniper), Morus nigra (black mulberry), Sorbus domestica (common rowan), Tetraclinis articulata (Cartagena cypress) and Viburnum tinus (laurustinus). In the initial direct observation, root necrosis was observed in all seven species, as well as neck necrosis in four of them. Given these symptoms, the presence of fungi was investigated, carrying out the isolation of fungi from the trunk, neck, roots and rootlets of each of the samples. Cylindrocarpon spp. was the only fungus detected and cited as a pathogen. The isolates obtained had a similar appearance on plate, with brown-copperish color and characteristic conidia. This type of fungus was detected most frequently in roots and rootlets, with a high incidence in four of the species; in the remaining two (Sorbus domestica and Viburnum tinus), it is suspected that the presence of fast-growing, non-pathogenic fungi (especially Chaetomium spp. and Trichoderma spp.) prevented the detection of more isolates of Cylindrocarpon spp. Anamorphs of Cylindrocarpon spp. have been associated with wilting, root rot or bark necrosis in forest nurseries, symptoms observed in the samples received
