Mobilizing parents during the restoration: from the fight against immorality to the defense of a Catholic education for their children (1889–1913)

Resumen
The National Association of Parents (NPA) was founded in April 1913, linked to the Catholic-social mobilisation of the time. By that time, the Church and some prominent members of the clergy had for years been calling on parents to defend their rights over their children’s education in order to safeguard Catholic education in the face of the educational policies of the liberal governments of the Restoration, which tended to bolster the role of the State in education. This paper will examine the discourse with which the Catholic media encouraged the formation of parents’ associations during the Restoration by appealing to their right to choose their children’s education. It will also look at the changes in the construction of Catholic masculinity that this mobilisation required in order to confront the positions defended by liberal and anticlerical sectors.
