The thirteenth-century Old French prose text known as the Fille du Comte de Pontieu recounts a tale unlike almost any other in Old French literature. The plot includes the heroine's rape on route to Compostela, her attempted murder odf her husband, and her subsequent apostasy after being sold to a saracen sultan. In addition to recounting an unusual tale, the "Fille du Comte de Pontieu" is one of the earliest examples of vernacular prose narrative, and is often labeled the oldest French prose novella.
