Raça na literatura tardo-medieval: o caso do Rei de Tars (c.a.1330)

    Contrary to what we commonly imagine due to the cultural and academic conventions established in the eighteenth century, medieval Christians were unaware of the diversity of human physiognomies. In the texts produced during the period, men and women of the Middle Ages demonstrated to know that there are black subjects in the world. In this article, I intend to present the theoretical and methodological references for which I have been employing in my research on mentions of blacks in medieval documentation. In order to illustrate the suggested operations, I apply the aforementioned framework to the late-medieval English poem King of Tars.

    Ao contrário do que comumente imaginamos devido às convenções culturais e acadêmicas estabelecidas no oitocentos, os cristãos medievais não desconheciam a diversidade de fisionomias humanas. Nos textos produzidos no decorrer do período, homens e mulheres da Idade Média demonstraram ciência de existirem sujeitos negros no mundo. Neste artigo, pretendo apresentar os referenciais teóricos e metodológicos pelos quais que venho empregando em minhas pesquisas sobre menções a negros na documentação medieval. A fim de ilustrar as operações sugeridas, aplico o referido instrumental ao poema inglês tardo-medieval Rei de Tars.
