    This article discusses the versusPagani Bolotini de falsis heremitis qui vagandodiscurrunt, written by a canon of Chartres(France) at the beginning of thetwelfth century. Produced in a momentof great religious effervescence characterizedby the moral and the ascetic increaseof the so called "gregorian reform",this poem offers the possibility of dealingwith the medieval eremitism subject accordingto a renewed approach: the dynamicsbetween literature and society.Our aim is to join historical, literary andcodicological methodologies in order toexplain the principles of the argumentativeprocess in which the poet built thesocial image of the false hermit.

    O presente artigo aborda os versusPagani Bolotini de falsis heremitis qui vagandodiscurrunt, escrito por um cônego de Chartres(atual França) no início do século XII. Redigidoem um momento de grande efervescênciasócio-religiosa marcada pelo recrudescimentoascético e moral da chama-da “reformagregoriana”, o poema nos oferece a possibilidadede abordar a temática eremíticamedieval segundo um enfoque renovador: adinâmica entre literatura e sociedade. Inseridoem uma abordagem mais ampla que visacompreender a sociedade como uma totalidade(cujas partes estão sempre em movimento),o procedimento de pesquisa empregadonesse artigo busca conciliar metodologiashistóricas, literárias e codicológicas a fimde explicitar os fundamentos do processoargumentativo através do qual o poeta construiua imagem social do falso eremita.
