    El siglo XIX, caracterizado por la inestabilidad crónica del poder político, significó una transformación radical en lo relativo a las relaciones entre el Estado y la Iglesia española. En un período relativamente breve se rompió la estabilidad entre el Trono y el Altar, pasando de la intervención del poder real sobre la Iglesia a un expolio y saqueo sin precedentes de los sucesivos gobiernos liberales.
