Introduction: methacrylate resins have transformed dentistry from 1950 to the present due to their strength, stability, and aesthetics. Objective: compare the use of filled and unfilled methacrylate resins in provisional fixed partial dentures. Method: a literature review was conducted defining search criteria in databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and CrossRef published in the last five years, in both English and Spanish. Development: by adding fillers and polymers to methacrylate resins such as zinc dimethacrylate, polyetheretherketone, aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, and nanobarium titanate, their physical and chemical properties are improved, including greater strength, durability, and antifungal activity. Filling materials that improve the properties of methacrylate resins have relevant clinical implications, suggesting that professionals may prefer filled resins for temporary fixed partial dentures, especially in patients who require greater strength or durability in their prostheses. Conclusions: the addition of filling materials to methacrylate resins makes them more durable and resistant in the oral cavity. In addition, these additives can promote the antifungal action of the prosthetic device, which favors the oral hygiene and health of the patient and therefore their satisfaction.
