This article had its genesis in our desire to honor the memory of Yakov Malkiel with a new monograph series, a companion set to the journal Romance Philology, the first volume of wich was to be dedicated to selections from Malkiel's correspondence with other remarkable men and women of the twentieth century. The correspondence in wich we focus here, letters between Malkiel and his future wife, Maria Rosa Lida, falls within that first decade (1940-1950), and was to have been a part of that inaugural volujme, however the singular charm of this correspondence made it clear that this "thin slice" deserved to be served up on its own.
