    El glaucoma es la segunda causa de ceguera a nivel mundial y constituye la principal causa de forma irreversible en el mundo, en Cuba y en el territorio de Las Tunas, con una carga negativa importante en la calidad de vida de los individuos, la familia y la sociedad. El objetivo de la investigación es profundizar en los fundamentos históricos, y la interrelación ciencia-tecnología-sociedad-desarrollo, relacionados con la prevención de la ceguera por glaucoma que constituye un problema, no solo de la ciencia, sino además de la sociedad. Se parte de la comprensión de los principios básicos del desarrollo histórico de las ciencias y las tecnologías al analizar los procesos sociales que determinaron este desarrollo. Se profundiza en los antecedentes históricos del desarrollo de la oftalmología en el mundo y en Cuba; enfocado en el estudio del glaucoma, su diagnóstico, prevención y tratamientos. A pesar del desarrollo alcanzado en la oftalmología, su interrelación con otras disciplinas de las ciencias y dentro de ellas, el estudio del glaucoma, se precisa de metodologías para la atención de los glaucomas, desde el primer nivel de atención, que incluyan la educación al paciente y la familia en relación a la enfermedad para prevenir su evolución hacia la ceguera, y en los discapacitados visuales por glaucoma, la rehabilitación, que permita mejorar su calidad de vida.

    The glaucoma is the second cause of blindness at world level and constitutes the main cause in an irreversible way in the world, in Cuba and in the territory of The Tunas, with an important negative load in the quality of the individuals' life, the family and the society. The objective of the investigation is to deepen in the historical foundations, and the interrelation science-technology-society-development, related with the prevention of the blindness for glaucoma that constitutes, a non-alone problem of the science, but besides the society. Taking as a point of departure the understanding of the basic principles of the historical development of the sciences and technologies, when analyzing the social processes that determined this development. Deepened in the historical antecedents of the development of the ophthalmology in the world and in Cuba; focused in the study of the glaucoma, their diagnosis, prevention and treatments. In spite of the development reached in the ophthalmology, their interrelation with other disciplines of the sciences and inside them, the study of the glaucoma, is necessary of methodologies for the attention to the glaucomas, from the first level of attention that include the education to the patient and the family in relation to the illness to prevent evolution toward the blindness, and in the visual disabled due to glaucoma, the rehabilitation that allows to improve quality of life.
