    Este artículo explora algunos usos y significados de los términos “negro” y “afro” en México, bajo la premisa de que las categorías con las cuales se nombra la alteridad y la identidad no son unívocas y sus sentidos varían de acuerdo con los contextos de enunciación, por lo que es importante considerar quiénes, cuándo, dónde y con qué fines las expresan. Se examinan tres ámbitos concretos: la antropología afromexicanista, el activismo engendrado en la región Costa Chica de Guerrero y Oaxaca, y la cotidianidad de un pueblo negro-afrodescendiente del litoral guerrerense. El ejercicio analítico permite identificar las significaciones múltiples, cambiantes y contrapuestas de ambas denominaciones, mismas que fluctúan entre acepciones racializantes y reivindicatorias de la otredad y la mismidad.

    This paper explores some uses and meanings of the terms “negro” and “afro” in Mexico, based on the premise that the categories used to name otherness and identity are not univocal, and their meanings vary according to the contexts of enunciation. Therefore, it is important to consider who, when, where, and for what purposes these terms are expressed. Three specific areas are examined: Afro-Mexican anthropology, activism originating in the Costa Chica region of Guerrero and Oaxaca, and the everyday life of a black-Afro-descendant community on the Guerrero coast. The analytical exercise allows for the identification of multiple, changing, and contrasting meanings of both designations, which fluctuate between racializing and vindicating interpretations of otherness and self-identity.
