This paper identifies seven areas of challenge and opportunity for vocabulary apps. These are derived from: reflection on three mobile learning designs; requirements drawn from vocabulary learning research; review of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) research.
The challenges identified are: 1) enhanced noticing and capture of vocabulary; 2) engaging and sustaining attention; 3) connecting incidental and deliberate learning; 4) integrating self-directed and teacher-directed activity; 5) providing adaptable adaptivity; 6) assessment with help; and 7) open support for seamless learning across activities and resources. Addressing these challenges should enable learners, using mobile devices, to better exploit and connect micro-learning opportunities to construct effective vocabulary learning trajectories.
