    La persecución y el martirio han sido una constante para la Iglesia Cristiana, los motivos han variado según la época y el contexto, siendo la fe en Jesús la fuerza que sostuvo a los mártires de antaño y a los actuales. El concepto mártir evolucionó de ser un testigo en asuntos eminentemente legales a ser un testigo de sangre, es decir, atestiguar su fe en Jesucristo a través de la persecución, sufrimiento y eventualmente la muerte. Discrepancias teológicas, oposición frontal y la fuerza del islam y su intransigencia, son actualmente las causas de martirio.

    Persecution and martyrdom have been a constant for the Christian Church, the reasons have varied depending on the time and context, faith in Jesus being the force that sustained the martyrs of yesteryear and those of today. The concept of martyr evolved from being a witness in eminently legal matters to being a witness of blood, that is, attesting to one's faith in Jesus Christ through persecution, suffering and eventually death. Theological discrepancies, frontal opposition and the strength of Islam and its intransigence are currently the causes of martyrdom.
