Gestos solemnes y acciones festivas: pugnas por la legitimidad cultural a comienzos del siglo XX

    Hacia 1917, la Comisión Municipal de Bellas Artes de Rosario se conformó con el objetivo de consolidar las instituciones artísticas en la ciudad. Guiados por un ideal de alta cultura, hombres reconocidos dentro de la sociedad asumieron este compromiso y se designaron a sí mismos como legítimos legisladores en materia estética.

    Sin embargo, la escasa proporción de autores locales en los primeros salones suscitó una serie de reacciones: desde la conformación de una nueva agrupación de artistas y un salón alternativo hasta la organización de veladas culturales, festivales y banquetes, que otorgaron visibilidad a figuras y obras ausentes en los ámbitos oficiales. En particular, a aquellos artistas que por sus prácticas ligadas a la cultura popular o por su género no se ajustaban al modelo dominante.  De estos eventos, que dieron lugar a ocasiones solemnes o de carácter festivo, quedan registros variados: publicaciones en la prensa, cartas, tarjetas de invitación, programas, catálogos, fotografías de grupo, retratos y caricaturas. Cruzando fuentes tradicionales de la historia con elementos provenientes de la cultura visual de la época, buscamos comprender el sentido de los gestos de quienes lucharon por un ideal de cultura amplio e inclusivo.

    Around 1917, the Municipal Commission of Fine Arts of Rosario was formed with the aim of consolidating the artistic institutions in the city. Guided by an ideal of high culture, recognized men within the society assumed this commitment and designated themselves as legitimate legislators in aesthetic matters.

    However, the low proportion of local authors in the first salons provoked a series of reactions: from the formation of a new group of artists and an alternative salon to the organization of cultural evenings, festivals and banquets, which gave visibility to absent figures and works in the official spheres. In particular, those artists who, due to their practices linked to popular culture or their gender, did not fit to the dominant model.  Of these events, which took place on solemn or festive occasions, a variety of records remain: publications in the press, letters, invitation cards, programs, catalogs, group photographs, portraits and caricatures. Crossing traditional sources of history with elements from the visual culture of the time, we seek to understand the meaning of the gestures of those who fought for a broad and inclusive ideal of culture.
