El desastre que supuso el naufragio del Titanic en la madrugada del 15 de abril de 1912 ha sido tratado por la historiografía y los mass media en proporciones equivalentes a las del tamaño del mítico transatlántico. Sin embargo, poco se ha reparado en los profesionales del arte y la arquitectura que perecieron en el hundimiento, así como de los inmediatos reflejos que semejante catástrofe produjo en el terreno del dibujo y la pintura del momento en que fueron rescatados sus supervivientes. Entre los primeros se cuentan los casos del arquitecto Edward Austin Kent y del pintor Francis Davis Millet y entre los segundos las obras que, como admirables e inteligentes testimonios históricos, fueron concebidas por Lewis Palmer Skidmore y, sobre todo, por Colin Campbell Cooper. En esta ocasión y una vez más, el arte se esforzó por hacer bello el dolor.

The disaster brought about by the wreck of the Titanic at the dawn of April 15, 1912 has been dealt with by historigraphers and the mass media in proportions equivalent to the size of the mythical ocean liner. However, littel attention has been paid to the art and adchitecture professionals who perished in the sinking, such as the architect Edward Austin Kent and the painter Francis Davis Millet, or to the products that the catastrophe has mirrored in the field of drawing and painting ever since the survivors were rescued. Examples of the latter are brilliant praiseworthy historical testimonies by Lewis Palmer Skidmore and, above all, by Colin Campbell Cooper. At this juncture and once again, art strove to turn pain into beauty.
