The present contribution intends to meditate on the consequences oftourism on coastal areas and in particular, on the rich system of small Italianarchipelagos, afflicted not only by problems of a physical and anthropic naturebut also by mass tourism and a seasonal “mordi e fuggi” (short holiday)population. The small size of these territories makes even more complex theresolution of “ordinary” problems on the mainland, such as connections, thesupply of fuel and water for civil and agricultural uses, energy independence, waste management, telemedicine. Starting from the results of a desk analysisof the main guidelines at the European scale, it is presented a project forthe Cheradi Islands of Taranto (South Italy) case study, hence derive possiblestrategies applicable to similar cases.
