Volterra is located in central Tuscany. Founded by the Etruscans for its favourable strategic position andthe rich mineral deposits of the surrounding area, it saw a slowing expansion but not in its importance, first in Roman times and then from the 8th century onwards with the construction of the medieval walls.Volterra, an episcopal city, with its Etruscan, Roman and medieval components, is one of the mostimportant cities for art in Tuscany. Moreover, it was recently distinguished as the first Tuscan capital ofculture. The mighty bastion of Saint Agnolo was built by Cosimo I of the Medici Family in the mid-16thcentury and designed by the military architect Giova Battista Belluzzi. The defensive structure was builtby the Florentines many years after the conquest of Volterra to protect the city from the north, near themedieval Fiorentina Gate. The enhancement of the bastion, which opens onto one of the city’s urbanparks, represents a fundamental theme of the municipal administration in the broader framework of urbanregeneration projects. The contribution intends to establish a framework for the project with aims forthe recovery and enhancement of the fortified structure and the surrounding park supported by results ofhistorical research and knowledge acquired from the survey.
