The present study deals with the process of preparing a restoration project with the conversion of a turreted building with historical-architectural value, which has covered several functions over the centuries, with the intention of transmitting its intrinsic values. The case study presented is the so-called ‘Torre di Tabbiano’, which was built in the mid-12th century as the bell tower of the disappeared church of S. Ponziano di Tabbiano, in the current municipality of San Giuliano Terme, and then probably served as a watchtower within the communication system of the municipality of Pisa. The method included an historical-architectural reconstruction of the asset and its context, assisted by the survey phase with visual analysis and comparisons with similar architecture in terms of construction techniques and historical functions in the surrounding area.
