The development of contemporary education is determined by the globalization and development of the information and communication technology. There are different learning management systems (LMS), e-learning platforms and massive open online courses (MOOCs) used by different educational institutions that want to ensure increase of students' interest and motivation.
These various learning environments incorporate different forms of interaction, where students can learn, participate in discussions, get feedback on regular bases and improve different skills.
This paper focuses on the benefits and drawbacks from different learning environments with special focus on MOOCs, both for students and educational institutes. The paper discusses these drawbacks from the educational as well as the social innovation perspective. The learning environments need to satisfy the Quality of Experience (QoE) parameters for their end users (students and instructors). In our opinion, change in the traditional focus, applied for addressing these issues, introduces new approaches that can provide the desired outcomes of using elearning platforms based on MOOCs.
The gathered information is used to determine functionalities of the novel learning environment that will be presented in the paper.
