    La importancia económica y geopolítica de las llamadas Islas de las Especias, las Molucas, en el Océano Pacífico, origen del clavo y la nuez moscada tan valoradas en Occidente, impulsó la exploración y el comercio, y al tiempo exigió la demarcación de un vasto territorio entre finales del siglo xv y principios del xvi, un proceso en el que el Tratado de Tordesillas, las expediciones de Magallanes y otros acontecimientos tienen una importancia esencial a la hora de entender las disputas y ambigüedades que ese Tratado suscitó, un desafío que tiene en las llamadas Juntas de Yelbes*-Badajoz (abril-mayo de 1524) uno de sus momentos más destacados y, acaso, menos conocidos, con enormes repercusiones políticas, comerciales y técnicas, en el ámbito de las matemáticas, los instrumentos de navegación y las mediciones terrestres.
