Gunnar Broberg (1942–2022) examines the life of Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778),the father of modern biological taxonomy, in this book published in Swedish in 2019 and in English—translated by Anna Paterson—in 2023. Broberg’s work draws on unpublished diaries and correspondence, books authored by Linnaeus, and visual sources. The Man Who Organized Nature sheds new light on the great Swedish naturalist and taxonomist, by also dialoguing with—and sometimes refuting—earlier biographies. The book considers all aspects of Linnaeus’s life, from his childhood to his death and the scientific and cultural legacy left to posterity, passing through family and academic life. It explores his ambitions, frustrations, and successes.
