  • In this paper, a computer tool for the analysis of news material, Premsa_QLT, is described. It was developed as a requirement for a research project about how the Catalan press dealt with information in a specific situation (known as Els Fets de Sants).

    The paper begins with a short description of available qualitative and quantitative text-analysis software tools. Then, it presents the case study of events that took place in the neighborhood of Sants, Barcelona, in October 1999. Next it explains how a specific computer system software was developed to digitalize and process the compilation, categorization, interrogation and interpretation of data. In particular the author emphasizes both the comprehensive capacity of the qualitative techniques applied to the categorization process and the usefulness of quantification to answer certain questions.
