Resumen de "La gran oportunidad": Gabriel Plata Astray, precursor del cultivo de la alfalfa en Galicia (1961-1973)

Este artículo narra el esfuerzo de Gabriel Plata Astray en favor del cultivo de la alfalfa en Galicia durante los años sesenta y primeros setenta del pasado siglo, desplegado en conferencias y artículos en la prensa de Lugo, Santiago y La Coruña. Plata Astray creía que el cultivo de la alfalfa multiplicaría la producción forrajera de Galicia, permitiría aprovechar la gran oportunidad que representaba la creciente demanda de carne y leche de la España del «desarrollismo», y constituiría el detonante que, poniendo en marcha la cadena del desarrollo, despejaría el futuro de la región. Todo esto constituyó una singular aventura y una ambiciosa propuesta ofrecida, con buen pulso literario, a la sociedad gallega de su tiempo.

This paper deals with the efforts by Gabriel Plata Astray in favor of the growing of alfalfa crops in Galicia in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. These efforts were publicized in talks and newspaper articles in Lugo, Santiago and La Coruña. It was Plata Astray’s belief that alfalfa crops would multiply forage production in Galicia. These crops would, thus, help take advantage of the great opportunity afforded by the increasing demand of meat and milk in Spain during the years of Franco’s «developmentalism». And finally, these crops would constitute the trigger that would set into motion the wheels of development, clearing a path forward for the future of the region. All this represented a unique adventure and an ambitious proposal, which Plata Astray offered to contemporary Galician society with literary dexterity.
