Maternidad y frustración en el cuento El quetzal resplandeciente de Margaret Atwood

    El artículo tiene como propósito realizar el análisis del cuento El quetzal resplandeciente, de Margaret Atwood, desde una perspectiva feminista. El texto aborda uno de los tópicos representativos del imaginario femenino: la maternidad frustrada. En este sentido, se refieren valoraciones acerca de la presencia del tema en la teoría feminista, con el fin de esclarecer una definición del concepto maternidad frustrada. A continuación, se despliega una mirada al tratamiento histórico de la figura materna en obras literarias del canon universal, con la intención de considerar los diferentes modos que se han adoptado a la hora de representar la maternidad frustrada en la literatura. Posteriormente, el análisis del relato permite apreciar el empleo de elementos simbólicos y discursivos conducentes a la reflexión sobre cuestiones como la desacralización de la maternidad, la invisibilidad histórica de la figura de la madre, los modos diversos de vivenciar la maternidad frustrada en el matrimonio, así como la maternidad frustrada como decisión consciente y personal. El estudio anterior suscita una reflexión sobre los estereotipos sociales que gravitan sobre la mujer y la maternidad en los momentos actuales y que lastran su autonomía y crecimiento personal. Asimismo, abre caminos en aras de ahondar en la obra de Margaret Atwood, en la que pueden mapearse temas de interés feminista como la manipulación de la maternidad y la dominación social femenina, que permean la producción literaria de la autora canadiense.

    The purpose of this article is to analyze the short story The Resplendent Quetzal by Margaret Atwood from a feminist perspective. The text addresses one of the representative topics of the female imagination: frustrated motherhood. In this sense, assessments are made about the presence of the topic in feminist theory, in order to clarify a definition of the concept of frustrated motherhood. Next, a look is taken at the historical treatment of the maternal figure in literary works of the universal canon, with the intention of considering the different ways that have been adopted when representing frustrated motherhood in literature. Subsequently, the analysis of the story allows us to appreciate the use of symbolic and discursive elements leading to reflection on issues such as the desacralization of motherhood, the historical invisibility of the figure of the mother, the different ways of experiencing frustrated motherhood in marriage, as well as frustrated motherhood as a conscious and personal decision. The above study provokes a reflection on the social stereotypes that weigh on women and motherhood at the present time and that hinder their autonomy and personal growth. It also opens paths for delving deeper into Margaret Atwood's work, in which themes of feminist interest can be mapped, such as the manipulation of motherhood and female socialdomination, which permeate the literary production of the Canadian author.
