Resumen de Los sistemas externos de representación como herramientas de la mente

  Este artículo busca servir de introducción al resto de los artículos que constituyen este monográfico. Con este objetivo se realiza un análisis sobre qué son los sistemas externos de representación como sistemas simbólicos y culturales, cuáles son sus principales características (qué representan; cómo lo representan y cuál es el entramado de la representación). Además se estudia como se aprenden estos sistemas haciendo hincapié en las diferentes etapas de aprendizaje y niveles de comprensión de los sistemas (aprender a decodificar, aprender la estructura sintáctica; aprender a utilizar los sistemas) y cuáles son sus funciones más importantes. En este análisis nos centramos tanto en las diferencias entre los usos más pragmáticos y más epistémicos de estos sistemas, cómo en sus funciones como medio de explicitación de los conocimientos, a partir de la propuesta de Dienes y Perner (1999). A lo largo de todo el artículo se insiste en la necesidad de dedicar espacio y tiempo a su enseñanza.

  The paper introduces the monograph and presents the other papers included in it. For this purpose, we analyse the nature and main characteristics of External Representation Systems as cultural and symbolic tools (what they represent, how they represent it, and what framework they use). We also study how these systems are learned, emphasising the different learning stages and levels of understanding (learning to decode, learning the syntactic structure, learning their use), and which are their most important functions. In this analysis, we focus both on the differences between the more pragmatic and epistemic uses of these systems, and on their functions as a means to externalise knowledge following Dienes and Perner's (1999) proposal. Throughout the paper, the need to invest time and space to teach these systems is underscored.
