Through a comparative study of the main feminine characters in two 19th century Latin-American works (María, by Jorge Isaacs, and La Cautiva, by Esteban Echevarría), the author, basing on the archetypical models of women in the period, deals with the contradictions that can be found between the two main characters. Furthermore, the most representative elements of the woman in novels in this century, such as Madama Sui, by Augusto Roa Bastos, and Mararía, by Rafael Arozarena, are studied. Lastly, possible topics of debate are pointed out concerning the point of view of the authors related to their sexual biases.
