Se ha discutido en muchas ocasiones si la “leyenda negra” es algo real o un conjunto de opiniones a las que se concede un relieve injustificado. Se han dado también diferentes fechas para su origen y se ha indicado que está más guiada por una finalidad política que por un afán investigador. Más allá de su existencia, origen y valoración, lo que no varía son los presupuestos metodológicos e ideológicos con los que se construye el relato de su historia. Esta práctica comenzó a inicios del siglo XX y continúa en nuestros días. Este artículo muestra que mucho antes de esa fecha, los rasgos característicos de la misma ya estaban presentes en La falsa filosofía, el escrito más citado del fraile reaccionario Fernando de Ceballos.

It has been discussed on many occasions whether the "black legend" is something real or a set of opinions to which an unjustified prominence is given. Different dates have also been given for its origin and it has been indicated that it is more guided by a political purpose than by an investigative desire. Beyond its existence, origin and valuation, what does not vary are the methodological and ideological assumptions with which the story of its history is constructed. This practice began at the beginning of the 20th century and continues today. This article shows that long before that date, its characteristic features were already present in La falsa filosofía, the most cited writing by the reactionary friar Fernando de Ceballos.
