  A comienzos del siglo XX, el Profesor Modesto Bargalló desarrolló en España una metodología didáctica en la que promovía la participación activa de los estudiantes en su aprendizaje, “descubriendo” la naturaleza por sí mismos a través de excursiones y actividades prácticas en el aula. Su innovador método permitió, no sólo la óptima formación de futuros maestros de la Escuela Normal de Guadalajara, sino también el descubrimiento de cuatro nuevos yacimientos paleontológicos y una valiosa aportación al patrimonio geológico, el cual se halla actualmente en el Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales y la Universidad de Alcalá.

  During the early 20th century, the Professor Modesto Bargalló developed in Spain a teaching methodology that promoted the active participation of the students in their training, “discovering” the nature by themselves through practical field trips and classroom activities. His innovative method allowed not only the optimal training of several classes of future teachers at the Normal School of Guadalajara, but also the discovery of four new palaeontological sites and the getting of a rich geological heritage that nowadays is hold at the Spanish National Museum of Natural Sciences and the University of Alcalá.
