  • Most inversion methods for palaeostress analysis yield criteria enough to judge the overall quality of the obtained solutions. That assessment, however, lacks of an objective quality and the comparison of results obtained from different methods is difficult. The main criteria in such evaluation are the degree of directional dispersion of the results, the proportion of explained faults with respect to the full population, and the mechanical compatibility of fault orientations with the obtained stress tensor. In order to achieve an objective value of quality, and to be able to use it as a numerical tool when comparing the quality of results among different analysis, the IQ index is proposed. The algorithm includes the above mentioned parameters and yields a quantitative result, allowing to classify the results as a function of their quality: the obtained tensors can be classified according to their IQ ranking, irrespectively of the inversion method used. Though the use of the numerical value stands alone and it is enough to compare results, we propose a ranking spanning from «unacceptable» to «excellent» solutions
