      El problema de la insularidad se define en la obra de E. Lalo de modo paradójico: como un modo de existir en el encierro de un puerto/puerta-cerrada que anula las promesas de partida y las na-vegaciones sugeridas por el mar, y como un espacio imaginario, punto de partida o de llegada a un país invisibilizado. Sin embar-go, en esa clausura, en esa falta, en esa invisibilidad se cimenta la única promesa de felicidad y liberación posible: la literatura y el arte, que se definen como pasión, modo habitar el tiempo, lucidez inútil, y lucha interminable. Así, se afirma a través de esos modos estéticos de producción, y se asume como destino, la expe-riencia trágica y comunitaria del absoluto aislamiento de Puerto Rico y se convierte esa experiencia en relato hermenéutico individual que explica la decisión de escribir, leer, y hacer arte para dejar una marca en la ciudad de San Juan, a pesar del clima hostil y la cerrazón reinantes.

      The problem of insularity is defined in the work of E. Lalo in a paradoxical way: as a way of existing in the enclosure of a port / closed gate that annuls the promises of departure and navi-gations suggested by the sea, and as an imaginary space, point of departure or arrival in an invisible country. However, in that closure, in that lack, in that invisibility is based the only promise of happiness and possible liberation: literature and art, which are defined as passion, way of inhabiting time, useless lucidity, and endless struggle.
