In this paper we show from a parallel corpus of English, Spanish and French language versions of reports from two international organizations (IPCC and IMF) some translation problems raised by bare noun phrases in English that bear a relation to semantic indetermination of that type of construction and the very restrictive conditions of occurrence of bare and indefinite subject NPs in Spanish and French. We criticize, in terms of referential values, Spanish and French translations with definite NPs that globally maintain the sentence structure of the original, as well as translating strategies that make possible in French and Spanish a shift of the bare or indeterminate NP to a post-verbal position and their implications in terms of thematic progression of the text.
