The central proposition in this paper is that the use of ICT is not value-free, and that we need to promote a vigorous debate about the relationship between the values embedded in the ways that we use ICT and the values we are seeking to promote through the teaching of history. Where there is a clear alignment between ICT and values, ICT is far more likely to have a transformative effect on learning rather than simply enhancing learning.
A number of examples of the use of ICT in history teaching from Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland will be considered
