Este estudio de investigación titulado EFICIENCIA ENERGÉTICA EN PUERTOS.
OPTIMIZACIÓN DE UNA TERMINAL DE CONTENEDORES, va a estudiar y
contenedores transportados. Todos ellos pertenecen a Integrated Container Logistics &
Supply Chaine Services (Maersk). This research project, entitled ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN PORTS. OPTIMIZATION
OF A CONTAINER TERMINAL, aims to study and verify whether the use of electrical
current from the shore (or port or terminal) in the auxiliary engines of large container
ships, between 11,000 and 16,000 TEUs, when they are docked and carrying out loading
and unloading (movements), leads to a significant reduction in the emission of the
following pollutants to the atmosphere: Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NOX),
Particulate Matter MP10, and Sulphur Oxides. The motivation for this study was to
contribute with real data to the maritime transport sector which, as is well known, is
currently faced with the need to reduce the emission of pollutants to the atmosphere, and
in doing so to minimize energy consumption.
In order to calculate the results, procedures were used as established by the US
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the International Maritime Organization
(IMO). Different databases were also used, from the Ministerio de Transporte, Movilidad
y Agenda Urbana, (Spanish Ministry of Development) through Puertos del Estado (Ports
of the State), and a global service organization specializing in technical solutions for
maritime engineering, Lloyd's Register, as well as information provided by two of the
terminals located in Algeciras, which work with the ships used in the study. These
databases and the terminals allowed us to establish the berthing periods and the specific
dates of these, as well as to know the exact movements of each of the ships in the period
in which the study took place.
Although there have been various studies of the different means of transport and
their environmental impact and energy efficiency, when it comes to the movement of
goods, there is no universally agreed criteria when developing estimates of consumption
and emissions, which makes it difficult to compare and contrast the results with those of other sectors. Therefore, it must be taken into account that many of the methodologies
used for emissions inventories assume fundamental parameters, such as load factors or
specific consumption, as constant values, when in reality this is not the case.
This research involved an analysis of the activity carried out by seven container
ships that operate in the maritime zone of the Strait of Gibraltar, with specific berths in
the Port of Algeciras. Of these ships, three belong to the same family, and the other four
to another with a greater number of containers transported. All of these belong to
Integrated Container Logistics & Supply Chain Services (Maersk).
