The main objective of this Doctoral Thesis is the study of the characteristics of
headland-bays at the Cádiz province coastline, including its evolution, current behaviour
and future trend.
Headland-bay beaches are developed downdrift of a natural or artificial coastal
headland and their origin is attributed mainly to the refraction and diffraction patterns of
waves in a coastal headland. Due to the differential influence exerted by the headland on
the waves reaching the beach, they usually show a longitudinal gradation in the energy
regime of the waves and the slope and grain size of the beach. Maintaining these
conditions allows the beach to reach an equilibrium state in which the planform headlandbay beach remains stable. However, the existence of specific changes in these
characteristics, such as the appearance of extreme wave events or the construction of
anthropic engineering structures (jetties, dams, etc.), as well as changes in the direction of
the arrival of storms situations that can produce changes in the sediment transport, can lead
to the breakdown of this equilibrium state.
In order to cover the main objective of this Thesis, the headland-bay beaches study
has been approached from three different perspectives. In the first place, a characterization
of the sediment has been carried out and the slope of each beach has been analyzed. For
this, topographic profiling and sediment sampling campaigns were developed. This study
has made it possible to observe the relationships between the mean grain size, the
carbonate content and the morphology of the beach profile, as well as to establish the
longitudinal distribution patterns of the slope and of the sediment along of each headlandbay beach. Secondly, a study of the recent developments in the evolution of the coast has
been made using aerial photographs and orthophotos. The exchange rates of the coastline
evolution for the last six decades in each headland-bay beach were obtained by using two
coastline proxies (the high-water line and the dune foot). Finally, an analysis of the current
equilibrium state in which each bay was found has been performed. For this, considering
the results obtained from the recent evolution research, an analysis contemplating the last
sixty years of the maritime climate has been carried out in the research area and the
MepBay® software has been used in some of the headland-bay beaches. The results have
allowed to establish a direct relationship between the extreme wave events, anthropogenic
interventions in the coastline, the increased beach erosion and the loss of the stability of the
headland-bay beaches.
