Over the last century, the use of synthetic pesticides has been the
main tool used to fight plagues and improve the productivity of crops.
However, the massive use of these chemical compounds and the growing
unrest of the global population regarding the consequences of their use
have led to the necessity to reexamine their current use.
In the present, there are two major concerns in the agro-food
industry regarding pesticides: the first one is the loss of their efficiency
mainly due to the appearance of a phenomena called resistance derived
from the abuse of their use. The second one is the toughening of the
regulations in relation to the aforementioned concern regarding their
potential damage to both nature and human health. This controversy has
generated an interest and necessity to find new alternatives more effective
and eco-friendlier for the control of plagues.
Natural products present themselves as a great choice for pest
management as they possess short half-live and generally can be easily
degraded by nature into non-harmful byproducts. They also may give
accessibility to new mechanisms of action not exploited by the current
herbicides.
Sesquiterpene lactones are a family of natural products which
present quite a variety of biological activities of interest to the agro-food
industry and medicine. Recently, a novel group of sesquiterpene lactones
derivatives with an unusual carbon skeleton composed by seventeen
carbon atoms have been discovered With the main objective of further studying the potential of these
C17 sesquiterpene lactone derivatives as lead-compounds for pest
management. We designed a synthetic pathway and achieved the
synthesis of four of them, as well as, seven novel natural C17/C15
sesquiterpene lactone dimers.
To study their potential as new lead-compounds and stablish a
structure-activity study they were evaluated in different bioassays against
plant and human pathogens of interest for the agrochemical industry and
medicine. Focusing on their interest for the agro-food industry, we tested
the molecules against Standard Target Species representative of four
families of common weeds and different selected weeds, as well as, three
plant pathogenic fungi known for their impact on crops. They were also
assayed against human pathogen microorganisms and against Aedes
aegypti (L.) larvae, vector of different human diseases.
The results obtained in the bioassays show that some of the target
natural products synthetized, as well as, some intermediates possess high
activity, especially in the phytotoxicity assays. Making them interesting as
lead-compounds for new natural-product based pesticides.
