Abstract
This paper analyzes the evolution of the Philippines in the last decades of the eighteenth century and in the course of the nineteenth century through different epigraphs: the forced transformation of the secular colonial model addressed to the traffic of the Manila Galleon and transpacific relations; the renewed turn towards Asia, the Indian Ocean and the China Sea; the development of an economic system based on the export of Filipino products and the opening of the islands; the evolution of the political life; the road to modernization; the weight of religious orders, the importance of the Chinese population and the collaboration with indigenous elites as singular features of the Philippines; the increase of conflicts and the path to revolution; and the US intervention that ended the Spanish sovereignty in the islands.
