  • Resumen
    • There has been interest over the last few decades in Barcelona for buildings in urban cores that have outlived their original purpose. To take advantage of the heritage of these buildings, both public and private sectors have taken action to meet today's social services needed the city. There are today many public libraries in Barcelona housed in buildings that were originally designed for other purposes. These structures have been adapted through a rehabilitation process for new uses . The adaptation of these buildings for use as libraries is the topic of this paper. Interventions have, in the past, happened without a defined methodology, which in some cases has been negative. These results give rise to the approach of this research: even if any building can be converted for use as a library, its functional outcome is not always optimal in terms of the time and resources invested in it. It is, therefore, important to define the criteria for and the appropriateness of the proposed changes. This research consists of case studies of buildings rehabilitated into public libraries in Barcelona and is limited in geographical area, the original function of the buildings, and the types of renovations that were made. The renovations were promoted by the Barcelona Provincial Council during the period from 1994 to 2004 when a new approach and model was taken. These methods allowed for a general case inventory, a detailed cataloging and specific sampling of representative buildings, which had varied original characteristics and uses, through research of documents and fieldwork based on both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The initial study includes both the theoretical intervention approaches and the change of use such as was the intervention practices at the general level and at the specific case level in the province of Barcelona. Cases were analyzed to ascertain the principies established for the architectural building adaptations into public libraries, which allowed the development of a methodology. This methodology was then extrapolated to similar cases, to generate a methodological tool for analysis of buildings. The analysis was based on identifying the similarities and differences for each building as well as in fieldwork, including interviews, to identify the criteria used by designers during their interventions. These features are also compared with the theoretical information of the topic and proposed use theme, and through the comparison it is possible to determine if these become favorable for the new use or limiting factors. Finally, there are conclusions and ecommendations for building interventions when converting them for use as public libraries in an attempt to establish more rational and less subjective criteria in their approach. The research aims to confirm the existing-building intervention suitability so that there is a positive evolution during conversion from past use to new public libraries. At the same time, it proposes the review of buildings with prior functions that might allow for use-change optimization and also optimizing performance in terms of time and cost while taking into account the proposed intervention, the change to the new function, with new technologies, from an interdisciplinary professional work.
