  • Resumen
    • The aim of the dissertation ¿The Linguistic Variations linked to the factors of age, gender or social class that occur in the tragedies of Euripides¿ is to analyse the linguistic variations that may arise in the plays of this author and that we may relate to sociolinguistic patterns, such as that of age, social hierarchy and gender. It will also take into account the influence that the role each character has in the plays may have on their individual use of language.

In other words, this study aims to unite linguistic study with literary analysis by giving numerical support to the conclusions extracted from the literary study of the Euripidean texts regarding the use of the language employed by the characters of these tragedies, taking into account the social groups to which they belong.

Chapter I displays a general presentation of the dissertation. The theoretical framework and the precedents that have led to the elaboration of this work are set, and the methodology and corpus used are explained.

Chapter II is dedicated to Forms of Address and centres on the differences that may be found in Euripides¿ tragedies regarding the utilization of proper names in the vocative to address the different characters from a sociolinguistic point of view. It also focuses on the employment of different terms used to refer to each one of the noted social groups. The differences in relation to the frequency of use of such terms will give us interesting information about the preferences of each of the characters as a result of their social position and that of their interlocutor.

Chapter III deals with Expressions of Generality, Anteriority and Posteriority; in this section, the different possibilities that the characters of the plays have at their disposal in relation to the topic mentioned in the title are explained. Thus the aim of this chapter is to identify which structures are those most frequent in the utterances of all the characters and what factors influence their choice.

Chapter IV focuses on Modality; in this chapter, just as in the previous one, the different possibilities that the characters have at their disposal with regard to the expressions framed within deontic modality, non-epistemic radical modality and epistemic modality are dealt with. Observation of these three kinds of modality will show which is more influenced by sociolinguistic patterns and highlight the possible reasons for this.

Lastly, chapters V and VI presents, on the one hand, the general conclusions that have been drawn from the elaboration of the research and the results obtained after the application of relatively modern methods of investigation to ancient Greek, and on the other hand, the bibliographical references used during the elaboration of this dissertation.
